Abstract

The present study was conducted on 14 adult dromedary camels to determine the morphometrical, histological and histometrical features of camel’s oesophagus with special reference to Majaheem breed. The average length of the oesophagus was 148.7±8.3 cm. The diameter of the oesophagus in different topographical locations of the oesophagus were 7.2±1.1, 4.4±0.3, 5.1±0.9, 5.9±1.0 cm in the cranial cervical, mid-cervical, at the level of the thoracic inlet and mid-thoracic, respectively, with an only significant difference between male and female animals at the thoracic inlet.  The thicknesses of the wall of the oesophagus in the previous locations were 0.39±0.13 cm, 0.34±0.13 cm, 0.39±0.14 cm and 0.52±0.11 cm, respectively. The differences in thickness were found to be significant between male and female camels. The histological features of the camel’s oesophagus were also recorded. It was lined by stratified squamous keratinized epithelium. The lamina muscularis mucosa was present in all examined sections. There were oesophagal glands of the mucous type that were distributed through the entire length of the oesophagus. The histometric measurement of epithelial and tunica muscularis layers were also reported. The averages thickness of lamina epithelia was 526.1 µm, and of the tunica muscularis was 1870.3 µm. The thickest tunica muscularis was present at mid-thoracic portion, which tapered towards cranially.
