Abstract

Present field survey was conducted to collect the first hand information on existing housing and milking management practices followed by 160 respondents of Rathi cattle owners rom four villages selected randomly from two purposively chosen tehsils of Bikaner district of Rajasthan. All cattle owners had maintained their animal in kuccha floor in shed, 53.75% kept their cattle inside dwelling house. 68.75% used bedding material during winter season, 62.50% had low ventilation provision in animal shed, and only 31.25% had proper light provision in animal shed. Knuckling (75%) was the main method of milking whereas only 15.63% of followed the full hand milking method. All the respondents used to clean udder and teats, wash hands before milking and milked their cattle twice a day. None of the cattle keepers followed dry hand milking. 53.12% of respondents used sand and clean water for cleaning of milking utensils. All of the respondents followed drying of the pregnant animals 60 days before calving. 81.25% of the respondents followed intermittent milking method of drying of the pregnant animals.
