Abstract

The effect of seasonal variations on semen biochemical indices was studied in Haryana bull. Four fertile, healthy adult Haryana bulls, aged between 5.5-6.5 years and weighing between 450-550 kg, were used  over a period of four  months, divided into two  seasons as winter season (December-January) summer season (May-June) for semen collection. Twenty-four semen samples (n=6/bull) were collected in each season by using artificial vagina. Each ejaculate was divided into two aliquots; one was assessed for physico-morphological and functional attributes viz., volume (ml), mass activity (0-5 scale), pH,  sperm concentration (million/ml), progressive motility (%), sperm livability (%), HOST (%), total morphological sperm abnormality (%) and acrosomal integrity (%) were estimated at different stages of cryopreservation in different seasons., while other was used for evaluation of seminal biochemical parameters viz., superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipid peroxidation (LPO), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and enzymatic glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), and lactate-dehydrogenase (LDH) enzymes. profile. Semen SOD and GST concentration was significantly higher (p<0.05) during the winter season.
