Abstract

The use of plants and their preparations to treat variety of diseases is an age-old practice. Holarrhena antidysentrica which is locally know as “Pandhara kuda” is a native plant of India. It has been used traditionally for the treatment of dysentery especially amoebic dysentery. In the present study the ethanolic stem bark extract of Holarrhena antidysentrica is screened by GC-MS method. In this analysis, 22 bioactive phytochemical compounds were identified. These compounds are predominantly phenolic derivatives and included hydrocarbons, carbohydrates, fatty acid, fatty acid ester, alcoholic compounds, alkaloids, ketones and alkenes compounds. These different active phytochemicals have been found to possess a wide range of activities, especially effective against helminths.
