Abstract
The present study aimed to document and compare the morphometric traits of three goat populations viz. Bidri, Jayawadagi and Nandidurga from randomly selected villages of Bidar, Vijayapura, and Chitradurga districts. Morphometric parameters including body weight, chest girth, height at withers, body length, face length, ear length, ear width, and tail length were recorded for both males and females. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA to assess breed-specific differences. Significant variations were observed across the breeds, with Bidri goats showing the highest body weight in males (40.00±1.89) and Jayawadagi goats in females (39.94±0.86). Jayawadagi bucks and adult female goats had higher values for body length (76.66±1.41 and 77.53±0.91), height at withers (67.27±1.91 and 70.12±0.76), face length (20.22±0.95 and 19.70±0.41), ear length (17.22±0.99 and 18.66±0.40), ear width (8.38±0.41 and 8.98±0.18) and tail length (18.83±0.86 and 17.96±0.40) than that of Bidri and Nandidurga adult goats. Nandidurga males (81.28±1.78) and Jaywadagi adult females (80.44±0.93) had larger chest girth. The breed-specific differences demonstrated for these morphometric traits reflect regional adaptations and management practices. These findings have implications for breeding programs focused on improving productivity and adaptation to local conditions. Further genetic and environmental studies are necessary to enhance the understanding of these differences and guide future breeding strategies.
