Abstract
The present study was conducted on 536 adult goats, randomly selected, from May 2023 to August 2024. Faecal samples were collected and examined using both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the seasonal dynamics of gastrointestinal nematode infections in goats from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. The overall prevalence of strongyles was found to be 79.85%. Although the prevalence was higher in males (81.57%) compared to females (79.56%), the difference was not statistically significant. However, a significant seasonal variation (P<0.01) was observed, with the highest prevalence recorded during the winter (86.16%), followed by the monsoon season (86.06%) and summer (54.95%). The intensity of infection, as indicated by mean egg per gram (EPG) values, was highest in the monsoon season (1697.56± 412.83), followed by winter (440.24± 45.06) and summer (314.10±66.63). A clear seasonal trend in faecal egg output was noted, which corresponded closely with the average rainfall patterns in Rewa during the study period. The mean EPG ranged from 343.07 to 643.33 when max temperatures were between 27.5°C and 40.5°C with the exception of Aug 2024. Notably, no strongyle eggs were detected when temperatures rose to between 44.8°C and 48.2°C. These findings underscore the importance of strategic parasite control, emphasising that effective and sustainable management can only be achieved through continuous monitoring of epidemiological factors, particularly temperature and rainfall, which significantly influence the transmission dynamics of parasitic infections.
