Abstract
Buffaloes, domesticated over 5,000 years ago, remain crucial to family economies, particularly among the resource-poor, who rely on buffalo-based enterprises to alleviate poverty. This study investigates the effects of socioeconomic and communication characteristics of buffalo owners in Ashoknagar district (M.P.), on their knowledge and adoption of scientific animal husbandry practices. A sample of 150 buffalo owners (each owning 1–2 milch buffaloes) was selected from three randomly chosen villages of Mungaoli Tehsil. A structured and pretested interview schedule was used for face-to-face data collection. Responses were coded, classified, tabulated, and statistically analysed. Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r) was used to determine relationships between owners’ characteristics and their knowledge and adoption levels. Age showed a significant negative correlation with knowledge (r/ =/ “0.203, P<0.05), indicating that younger farmers possessed greater awareness of scientific husbandry methods. Landholding size was positively correlated with knowledge (r/ =/ 0.204, P<0.05). Notably, extension contact exhibited the strongest positive correlation with knowledge (r/ =/ 0.500, P<0.01) and also significantly correlated with adoption of practices (r/ =/ 0.161, P<0.05). Other variables such as education, herd size, and mass media exposure showed no statistically significant associations with either knowledge or adoption.
