Abstract
This study aimed to characterise and compare morphometric traits of Bidri, Jayawadagi and Nandidurga goat breeds across randomly selected villages in Bidar, Vijayapura, and Chitradurga districts. Morphometric traits such as body weight, chest girth, height at withers, body length, face length, ear length, ear width, and tail length were measured in both male and female goats. Data analysis using ANOVA revealed significant breed-specific variations. Jayawadagi males and females exhibited significantly higher values (in cms) for body length (60.26±0.67 and 58.32±0.69), height at withers (70.53±0.90 and 68.76±0.53), face length (18.73±0.73 and 17.88±0.31), ear length (18.06±0.60 and 17.17±0.29), and tail length (15.00±0.58 and 14.94±0.34) compared to Bidri and Nandidurga goats. Additionally, Bidri males (7.00±0.25 cm) and Jayawadagi females (7.67±0.16 cm) had the largest ear width. These variations among the three breeds highlight the regional adaptations and management practices. The findings provide valuable insights for breeding programs aimed at enhancing productivity and adaptability to local conditions. Further, genetic and managemental studies are warranted to understand these variations better and strategise future breeding .
