Abstract
Nutrition is a major constraint for dairy goat production in the Gezira State, Sudan, and browse is an important feed. Lukh (Dichanthium annulatum) is a grass consumed by goats. There is no information on the effects of different percentages of A. tortilis and F. albido-podos in mixed diets on the performance of Tagger does offered Lukh hay. Consequently, 16 Tagger does were used in a completely randomised design in the pre and postpartum periods. The animals were fed Lukh hay ad lib and 500g of a mixed diet with different percentages of A. tortilis and F. albida pods. The data were statistically analysed using the completely randomised design, and Duncan’s multiple range test was used for means separation. This paper reports the prepartum period results. Lukh hay had low CP, NFE, and high CF. A. tortilis had higher CP and lower CF and NFE than F. albida. Weekly mean BW generally increased with the advancement of the feeding period in all groups, and the mean treatment BW increased (P>0.05) with the A. tortilis percentage in mixed diets. Mean body condition score (BCS) generally increased in all three treatment groups with advancement of the feeding period and with increased percentage of A. tortilis in the diets. Mean DMI through lukh hay and TDMI increased in all mixed pods diets, and mean DMI generally decreased in the control with the advancement of experimental feeding. Mean DMI and Treatments MDMI generally decreased with increasing A. tortilis pods in mixed diets. Mean daily water intake generally increased with the advancement of the feeding period. There were significant correlations among different parameters.
