Abstract

The present study was conducted on six buffalo foetii with crown to rump (CVR) length ranging from 0.9 to 6.0 cm within age ranged between 32.7 to 55.6 days. The entire head of foetus was fixed in Bouin‘s fixatives and processed for paraffin blocks preparation. The sections of 5-6 µm thickness were stained with Harris Hematoxylin and eosin. The pharyngeal pouches were well marked at 0.9 cm CVRL. The Meckel’s cartilage primordium was observed at 1.8 cm CVRL which differentiated into the cartilaginous structure at 2.5 cm CVRL. The Meckel’s cartilage was PAS positive. The role of Meckel’s cartilage in the development of mandible has also been discussed.
