Abstract

The present study was carried out on the data obtained on the production performance of 95 Tharparkar cattle. The genetic correlation of age at first calving, with days to reach peak yield, peak yield, lactation milk yield, lactation length and milk yield per day of lactation  length  were mostly negative and non-significant, service period with all production traits were positive and highly significant (0.241, 0.621, 0.606, 0.710 and 0.148), gestation period with days to reach peak yield (-0.189) and lactation length (-0.10) were highly to significantly correlated where as with other production traits were non significant, dry period with almost all production traits were negative and highly significant, and inter calving period with all production traits were positive significant to highly significantly correlated (0.098, 0.740, 0.535, 0.0.513 and 0.165). The phenotypic correlation of age at first calving, with days to reach peak yield, peak yield, lactation milk yield, lactation length and milk yield per day of lactation  length were -0.058, -0.002, 0.051, 0.124 and 0.065,  respectively. The correlation coefficients were negative to non-significantly correlated. The service period was positive and highly significantly correlated with all production traits except days to reach peak yield which was non significant (0.056, 0.197, 0.468, 0.644 and 0.153). The gestation period was positive but non-significantly correlated with all production traits except lactation length. Dry period was negative highly significantly correlated with all production traits except days to reach peak yield.  The highly significant genetic and phenotypic correlations of peak yield, lactation length and milk yield per day of calving interval with all reproductive traits may lead to the conclusion that Tharparkar cattle can very well be selected on the basis of  improved phenotypic performance in terms of milk  yield to enhance future improved production performance.
