The present study was undertaken to understand and to demonstrate the efficacy of indigenous polyherbal medication against ectoparasite infestation in cattle. The study illustrated the importance of indigenous knowledge systems for cost effective and sustainable livestock health care through readily available inputs to farmers. A 6 per cent indigenous herbal formulation consists of neem and monks pepper was prepared by farmers and applied topically twice daily for two days. The mean ectoparasite infestation in observed sites of animal was 17.13 ticks in 30 square centimetre area. The ectoparasite counts were significantly controlled in all post treatment period of 6, 24, 30 and 48 hours. The efficacy of the formulation was 100 per cent at 48 hours and subsequently throughout the study period. It was found that the medication had uniform efficacy over ticks at different predilection sites and treatment duration. Further, reinfestation of ticks was not noticed till 29th day of experimental study reiterating residual effect of herbal medication. These technological alternatives can provide no or low cost solution against ectoparasite infestation at farmers doorstep. It can help to minimize use of chemicals which cause unwarranted welfare issues in small holder dairy farming system as well as residual drug problems in milk and meat.
