Title: Variations in circulating adipocytokine and lipid profile during periparturient period in primiparous Haryana cows

Present study was conducted on six primiparous pregnant Haryana cows belonging to the same age group and body condition score to elucidate the levels of adipocytokine leptin and lipid profile during the periparturient period. The blood samples were aspirated from the jugular vein and plasma was harvested at fortnight interval from expected 30 days prepartum to 30 days postpartum. The samples were evaluated for levels of leptin hormone, triglycerides (TG), cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA). The results of plasma leptin and TG revealed peak values in late pregnancy which significantly declined to nadir at calving and increased to prepartum levels at 30 days postpartum. The levels of cholesterol, HDL and LDL did not show variations from pregnancy to calving but thereafter increased significantly above the prepartum levels. The levels of NEFA rose from late pregnancy to parturition and then reduced to prepartum levels in 30 days. The results of Pearson’s correlation revealed positive correlation between plasma leptin levels and TG (r=0.48), TG with cholesterol (r=0.38) and cholesterol with HDL (r=0.66) while NEFA revealed negative correlation with leptin (r=0.46), TG (r=0.58), cholesterol (r=0.36) and HDL (r=0.40). In conclusion, the variations in levels of adipokine leptin and the indicators of the lipid profile during the periparturient period, suggesting their important role in energy metabolism and maintenance of body condition of dairy cows during the vital period.
