Abstract

The present study was conducted to karyotype and prepare idiogram of Bidri goats. Blood samples for short term lymphocyte culture were collected from 5 male and 5 female goats and then mitotic chromosome preparation was accomplished. The diploid chromosome number was found to be 60, consisting of 29 pairs of acrocentric autosomes and a pair of allosomes (X and Y). The X chromosome was the longest acrocentric and Y chromosome was found to be sub metacentric. The mean mitotic drive was 62.5±1.33 and 63.25±1.84 per cent in males and females, respectively. The mean relative length of autosomes varied from 1.77±0.07 to 5.21±0.19 in females and 1.98±0.06 to 4.97±0.10 in males. The relative length of X- chromosome in females was 5.49±0.24 and that in males was 5.31±0.23, whereas Y- chromosome had a relative length of 1.86±0.10. The mean values of Arms ratio, Centromeric Index and Morphological Index were 3.97, 23.56 and 302.63, respectively. This karyological study indicates the normal chromosomal complement in studied Bidri goats.
