Abstract

Twenty bovine calves (weighing 50-120 kg, 12 females and 8 males) aged 4 months to 1 year presented with long bone fractures were stabilized by applying multiplanar external skeletal fixation (ESF) using epoxy putty (M-seal) following appropriate anaesthetic protocol. The status of fracture healing and weight bearing by the animals were regularly observed. All the animals were given a course of antibiotic therapy and regular wound dressing during treatment. Early weight bearing along with radiographic union (within 30 to 60 days) was observed in 8 cases, satisfactory weight bearing and delayed union with mild lameness were observed in 8 cases during four months observation period. It was concluded that multiplanar epoxy-pin ESF provides rigid and stable fixation for open fractures of long bones below stifle and elbow joint in animals weighing up to 120.
