Abstract
A total of 51 rectal swab samples were collected from apparently healthy (n=39) as well as diarrhoeic (n=12) camel calves from an organized camel farm of Bikaner, Rajasthan. Bacterial culture revealed isolation of E. coli colonies from 14 (35.89%) healthy and 12 (100%) diarrhoeic camel calves. From these colonies extraction of bacterial DNA was performed. Detection of different antibiotic resistance genes encoding extended-spectrum â lactamase (ESBL) (blaTEM, blaSHV, blaOXA-1, blaCTX-M-1, blaCMY-2, blaKPC and blaOXA-48), colistin resistance (mcr-1), class 1 integron-integrase (int1) and tetracycline resistance (tetA, tetB) from E. coli isolates was carried out by PCR. Screening for different antibiotic resistance genes in E. coli isolates revealed the highest prevalence of tetA gene (73.06%) followed by int1 (69.23%), blaCTX-M-1 (65.38%), tetB (61.53%), blaTEM (57.69%), mcr-1 (42.30%), blaOXA-48 (38.46%), blaSHV (30.76%), blaOXA-1 (30.76%), blaCMY-2 (26.92%) and blaKPC (0%) genes. This study reveals a high percentage of camel calves as carriers of tetracycline resistance, ESBL producing and colistin resistance genes in India which can contribute to the dissemination of multidrug-resistant E. coli between the three axes of one health i.e. animal, human and environment.
