Abstract
A total of thirty-one Murrah buffaloes with a history of normal cervico-vaginal discharge during three successive estruses and failure to conceive following artificial insemination were included in the present investigation. During estrus, uterine samples were collected using the cytobrush technique. The cytobrush was rolled onto a sterile glass slide, air-dried, and fixed with methyl alcohol. The slides were stained with modified Giemsa stain, and the percentage of polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells was determined by counting at least 100 cells under a microscope at 400x magnification to diagnose subclinical enometritis. The animals were divided into two groups: Group I (Control group, n=6), which received intrauterine infusion of 60 ml of normal saline, and Group II (Ozone group, n=25), which received intrauterine infusion of ozone gas 55 µg/ml (60 ml) on days 1 and 2 o f estrous cycle using a glass syringe. Animals with a PMN cell count below 5% were inseminated during the subsequent spontaneous estrus. No appreciable change in PMN cell count was observed in the control group. In the ozone-treated group, recovery and pregnancy rates were 68% (17/25) and 35.29 % (6/17), respectively. The findings suggest that ozone therapy may serve as a potential alternative to intrauterine antibiotics for the management of subclinical endometritis in buffaloes.
