Abstract
The aim of this study was early detection of the bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (BPI3V) infections in the upper respiratory tract of dairy calves using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. A total number of 232 nasal swabs were collected from apparently healthy, clinically sick and dead dairy calves of upto one year age from Himachal Pradesh. The samples were tested for BRSV and BPI3V infections using molecular detection through RT-PCR assay. Calves detected with BRSV and BPI3V infection showed symptoms such as fever, nasal and ocular discharge, coughing and/or difficulty in breathing. Samples tested for BRSV nucleocapsid gene (435 bp) and BPI3V nucleocapsid gene (127 bp) using RT-PCR revealed an overall prevalence rate of 25% and 8.62%, respectively. The incidence of these viral infections was highest in dead calves followed by clinically ill calves. In addition, the co-infection was also recorded in 12.5% calves. The molecular detection using RT-PCR technique seems to be a useful diagnostic tool for an early detection of BRSV and BPI3V infections in dairy calves.
