Abstract

A study was conducted to estimate the pre- and post-weaning average daily gain (ADG) in 6748 Sirohi goats born during 2005 to 2017 at farmers’ flocks. The overall least-squares mean for pre-weaning (0-3M: ADG1) and post-weaning (3-12M: ADG2) average daily gain were 105.96±1.86 and 44.17±0.81 gm/day, respectively. Sire, year of birth, sex of kid and cluster had highly significant (P<0.01) effects on both pre and post-weaning ADGs whereas season of birth had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on ADG1 but the significant effect (P<0.05) on ADG2. Type of birth had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) only on ADG1 whereas parity had a significant effect (P<0.05) on ADG2. Heritability estimates for pre- and post-weaning ADGs were 0.62±0.06 and 0.24±0.05, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlation between the two traits was low and negative.
