Abstract

The present study was undertaken to know the association of external morphological characters such as shape of udder, shape of fore teats, length of naval flap, colour of anus and vulva, length of horns and type of horns, with milk production traits such as standard lactation milk yield (SLMY), total lactation milk yield (TLMY), lactation length and peak yield in Ongole cattle at Livestock Research Station, Mahanandi, Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh. The mean standard lactation milk yield, total lactation milk yield, peak yield and lactation length were 914.33±29.32 kg, 946.39±34.45 kg, 4.55±0.12 kg and 312.88±7.72 days respectively. The study revealed that animals with trough-shaped udder and conical (long) teats have non-significantly higher standard LMY than others, and the external morphological characters have no significant effect on milk yield (standard LMY, total LMY and peak yield). Therefore, it was concluded that the external morphological characters can not be used as selection criteria for milk yield in Ongole cattle.
