Abstract

The present investigation was conducted on Murrah buffalo and Karan fries cattle bulls with an objective to identify seminal microscopic traits associated with subfertility. Bulls were selected and categorized on the basis of records maintained at Artificial Breeding Research Centre (ABRC), National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal. The animals were grouped into three categories viz, Normal category, Poor semen freezability (PF), and Poor semen quality (PSQ). Semen was collected from all adult bulls of each category to study all the seminal parameters i.e, ejaculate volume, mass motility (MM), individual motility (IPM), live per cent (non-eosinophilic) count (NESC), sperm concentration (SCON), hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST), acrosomal integrity (AI) and post-thaw motility. In Murrah buffalo, significant deviation in studied parameters were observed between groups (P<0.05), except ejaculate volume. In the comparison of PF bulls, normal category bulls revealed significantly higher mean values of SCON, HOST and post-thaw motility. Whereas, when compared with PSQ category bulls, the values of IPM (%), NESC (%), SCON, HOST and post-thaw motility were higher in normal category bulls. Similarly, in Karan Fries bulls all the seminal parameters were highly significant (p<0.05) between the three categories of bulls.
