Abstract

The study was conducted on fifteen cross-bred cattle with intestinal intussusception subjected to laparo-enterectomy. Significant increase in packed cell volume and non-significant increase in haemoglobin and total leukocyte count; and significant neutrophilia corresponding with lymphocytopenia were noticed. Significant hypochloremia, hypokalemia and hyperglycemia; and non-significant hypernatremia were observed invariably in all cases of intestinal intussusception. Amongst the acute phase proteins, a non-significant increase in serum amyloid A and a significant increase in haptoglobin and fibrinogen were also invariably noticed in all the affected animals and the values exhibited an increasing trend with the duration of illness. A general increase in peritoneal fluid parameters viz. total protein, specific gravity and cell counts was also recorded. Based on the results packed cell volume, total leukocyte count, neutrophils and lymphocytes per cent, serum amyloid A, haptoglobin, fibrinogen and peritoneal fluid parameters were found significant clinical variables reflecting the severity of the intestinal intussusception in cattle, and amongst them capillary refill time and packed cell volume may serve as prognostic indicators.
