Abstract
High meat prices stimulated improved goat production in Sudan, but it is mainly traditional, characterized by low inputs and outputs. Nutrition is a primary constraint due to rangeland deterioration, and crop residues and browse are important feed sources. Baram is the Acacia seyal flowers which improve animal reproductive performance. There is no available information on the feeding of Nubian goat male kids’ performance and carcass characteristics. Consequently, this study was conducted. Twelve Nubian goat kids were divided into three groups and allocated at random to three treatments. They were fed improved Seewa ad lib. and Baram based concentrates at different levels. Baram had high CP, NFE and low EE and CF. Improved Seewa DMI and Total DMI (TDMI) varied among animals and weeks and overall mean DMI decreased significantly (P<0.05) with concentrate level. Improved Seewa overall mean TDMI and water intake increased significantly (P<0.05) with concentrate level. Overall mean relative weight gain decreased and feed conversion ratio increased with concentrate level. Baram had excellent nutritional value and should be exploited in goat nutrition. Baram based concentrate level improved Nubian Kids TDMI, water intake and weight gain. References Abdulrazak SA, Muinga RW, Thorpe W and Ørskov ER (1997).
