Abstract
The present study was conducted on 12 animals with squamous cell carcinoma to evaluate the effect of 5-fluorouracil in preventing reoccurrence after surgical excision. In the treated group, no reoccurrence of SCC was reported except in 1 cow in which regional metastasis to parotid lymph node was reported 135 days after surgery. In surgically excised animals, only 1 cow with vulvar SCC showed reoccurrence after 157 days of surgery. Administration of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) in surgical beds prevented the reoccurrence of most moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma despite evidence of tumour cell remnants in the surgical bed. However, regrowth was observed in poorly differentiated tumours having a high mitotic index.
