Abstract
The present study aimed to assess the usefulness of pericardial catheterization for the management of pericardial effusion in cattle. Cattle with pericardial effusion were selected based on thoracic radiography and ultrasonographic examination. Ultrasound-guided pericardial catheter (Supracath) was fixed at the 5th intercostal space. Pericardial sac was irrigated with warm saline and metronidazole. Clinical, hemato-biochemical, electrolytes, cardiac biomarker and ultrasonographic examination were performed before (day 0) and after catheterization (day 5). The mean volume of effusion was drained by pericardiocentesis (1.92±0.58 litres). There was a highly significant decrease (P<0.01) in the mean distance between the pericardium and epicardium in USG on day 3 (1.37±0.14 cm) and day 5 (1.20±0.09 cm) when compared with Day 0 (3.28±0.54cm). In the post-pericardiocentesis animals, haematological and biochemical parameters had remarkable changes which indicated improvement in the clinical parameters. Pericardial catheterization was found to be a suitable method to improve the clinical conditions of the pericardial effusion and prolonging the longevity of the animal.
