Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate therapeutic response in bacterial respiratory infections in cattle. Fifty cattle diagnosed for pneumonia based on clinical presentation, radiography and tracheobronchial wash cytology were divided into two therapeutic groups. Twenty-four cattle diagnosed with pneumonia were treated empirically with a combination of ceftiofur and gentamicin. Twenty-six affected cattle were treated with enrofloxacin @ 2.5-5 mg/kg i.m bid based on culture sensitivity results. The efficacy of the antibacterials was compared based on changes in clinical scores towards normalcy, duration of clinical recovery, recovery scores, and improvement in hematobiochemical parameters. All the numerical data were analysed by SAS software. Student’s t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to compare the variance among different groups of animals. Pre and post-treatment hemato-biochemical parameters were compared by paired t-test. Sixty per cent of all the treated animals recovered. Overall recovery was complete in 36 per cent and partial in 24 per cent of the cattle. Comparatively, complete recovery was higher (50 per cent Vs 20.8 per cent) and the recovery period was shorter (10.7±0.71 days Vs 13.7±1.01 days) with enrofloxacin than ceftiofur-gentamicin combination. Recovery score was significantly high with enrofloxacin (0.52±0.04) as compared to ceftiofur+gentamicin (0.34±0.03). It can be concluded that severe cases of bacterial pneumonia responded better to the ceftiofur–gentamicin combination therapy, while enrofloxacin demonstrated higher sensitivity in the majority of cases and showed a better response in less severe infections.
