Abstract
The present study aimed to correlate the external morphological traits of the mammary gland of Jamunapari goats with milk production and somatic cell count (SCC) in milk which is an indirect indicator of mammary gland health. The study was conducted on 80 healthy Jamunapari goats of 2-4 years of age with symmetrical udder irrespective of their lactation number. The goats were reared in Goat Farm, DUVASU, Mathura. Jamunapari goat’s udders were of bowl and cylindrical shaped and teats were of funnel, cylindrical and bottle-shaped. Various dimensions of udder viz. Length, diameter and cleft were measured higher in cylindrical-shaped udder goats and udder depth, udder ground distance, teat length, inter-teat distance and teat angle were calculated more in bowl-shaped udder. Both the milk yield and SCC were less in cylindrical-shaped udder goats than bowl-shaped udder goats. Results demonstrate that traits of the udder shape influence the milk yield and somatic cell count, and so they can be regarded as functional traits indicating animal health and herd profitability.
