The present study was conducted to assess the seroprevalence of brucellosis in cattle in western Rajasthan by using the prescribed tests viz. Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) and indirect- Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (i-ELISA). For this purpose, a total of 144 serum samples were collected from 87 cattle with the clinical symptoms apparent in suspect cases of brucellosis, and 57 apparently healthy cows, from the various parts of Western Rajasthan including Barmer, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jalore, Jodhpur, Nagaur and Sirohi districts. The overall seroprevalence was found to be 13.89% and 15.28% by RBPT and i-ELISA, respectively. The highest percent seroprevalence was observed in Bikaner district (23.68% by RBPT and 26.32% by i-ELISA). The seroprevalence was found to be higher in diseased animals (16.09% by RBPT and 18.39% by i-ELISA) as compared to apparently healthy animals (10.53% by RBPT as well as i-ELISA). The present study highlights that the brucellosis is the major etiological agent of abortion in cattle with a high seropositivity in Western Rajasthan and there is an urgent need to implement strict control measures to control the disease.
